5 Ways to Celebrate Imbolc

imbolc, wheel-of-the-year, sabbat, witchcraft, wicca

Winter is still in full swing, but the days are becoming longer again and hints of spring are starting to be seen. Beneath the snow and the frost, blooms are beginning to peek their heads and animals are slowly beginning to rustle awake. The promise of warm days around the corner looms large in our minds. Imbolc is a fire festival that honors this time of year and celebrates the returning of the light and the warmth of the sun. Wondering how you can celebrate this cross-quarter day and the changing of the seasons? Here are five ideas to get you started!

1. Create a Floral Arrangement. It may still be a bit too nippy to spend much time outside, but that doesn't mean you can't bring some of the outside indoors. Gather some in season flowers or pick some up from your local florist and take a meditative moment to create a floral arrangement that you can place in your home or on your altar. Some flower correspondences for Imbolc include white and yellow flowers like daffodils, crocus, and snowdrop. If you want to really take this idea to the next level, weave the flowers into a flower crown that you can wear as you celebrate. I mean, seriously, is there anything more festive than a flower crown?

2. Spring Cleaning. As winter makes way for spring, now is the perfect time to do a little cleaning, physically and energetically. Go through your things and clear out anything you no longer want or need. Box up anything you decide not to keep and drop it off at a local charity so that it can go on to have a new life elsewhere. Another important way to cleanse is energetically. Open the windows and smoke cleanse your house from top to bottom to loosen up any residual energy that you may want to kick to the curb. You can also cleanse floors and surfaces with a magickal wash, and then utilize a broomstick to symbolically sweep up all that stagnant energy that's been shaken up and kick it out the front door.

3. Fire Magick. Since Imbolc is a fire festival, it only makes sense that now would be the perfect time to practice a little fire magick. Maybe you'd like to do some candle magick. Or perhaps a burning ceremony is more your style. You could write what you hope to manifest for the upcoming season on a bay leaf and burn it in your cauldron. Or maybe you can do a little work with sigils and burn them to charge them for a magickal working. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you stay fire safe while doing it.

4. Make a Brigid's Cross. For many Wiccans, pagans, witches, and folk Christians/folk Catholics, Imbolc is a holiday to celebrate the goddess Brigid or Saint Brigid, mistress and keeper of the home and hearth, as well as livestock, crafts, medicine, smithing, and tender of the eternal flame. One of the most popular ways to honor her is by making a Brigid's Cross using things like reeds, grass, or straw. You can also use sturdy paper or pipe cleaners if that is all you have to hand. A quick Google search will provide tutorials that can be followed. Hang your finished Cross over your fireplace or stove and ask for Brigid's blessing and protection over your home.

5. Make a Corn Dolly. Another fun craft idea for Imbolc is to create a corn dolly. Using softened corn husks, you can weave them into the shape of a doll that symbolizes Brigid in her bride or maiden aspect. These are said to bring good fortune and fertility into the home. For some added oomph, feel free to decorate your corn dolly with flowers and the colors of Imbolc such as white, green, and red. Afterward, place this on your hearth alongside your Brigid's Cross!

How do you celebrate Imbolc? What are some of the ways you invite the light and the warmth back in after a long, cold winter?
